Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982) was the originator of what is now known as "Bowen Therapy". Tom was born in Brunswick, Victoria and was the third child and only son of William and Norah Bowen, who moved to Australia from Wolverhampton in the U.K.
Tom was fascinated by the different postures people had, and how this related to their symptoms of ill-health or muscle pain, etc. His fascination with bodywork was born out of a desire to help people who were suffering.
After serving in World War II, Tom became interested in new ways of alleviating human suffering. He noticed that when he made certain moves on a body, it had particular effect. He developed and refined the effectiveness of his observations without training in any particular healthcare field to guide him. He always stated that the therapy was simply a ‘Gift from God’.
A humble man, there is no doubt that Tom was a natural healer. He drew remarkably accurate conclusions as to the root of the cause of people’s pain. The results achieved seem to be miraculous, children learning to walk again after being crippled and in braces, lifelong health issues resolved and many a client saved from the surgeon’s knife.
His work in his popular clinic in Geelong, was verified by the 1975 Victorian Government Inquiry into alternative health care professions.
It was only in 1986 that the technique was brought to other countries. Oswald Rentsch – a former massage therapist who Tom had invited to work and study with him - was authorized by Bowen to document and teach his methods. And with the help of Bowen’s Clerk, Rene Horwood, and his wife Elaine, they together produced a record of the Bowen Technique which is now taught world-wide.
For as long as I can recall, I have held a great interest in Complimentary and Alternative Health, preferring a holistic approach where possible in which to take a proactive stand in my health and wellbeing, and have a passionate belief that the body, given the right circumstances, is largely able to repair itself and maintain balance, or ‘homeostasis’.
I am an avid enthusiast of Bowen Therapy having first experienced it myself as a client. I was so impressed with the profound benefit it had on my own health and wellbeing and alleviation of pain from injuries caused by horse riding falls, that having reached a crossroads in my life, I decided to train as a practitioner.
I undertook my training through Bowtech with The Border College of Natural Therapies in Australia prior to returning to live in my home county of Devon.
I now enjoy living on Dartmoor, running busy practices from my home clinic in Dousland and Tavistock.
“I expect to pass through this world but once,
any good thing therefore that I do,
or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature,
let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it,
for I shall never pass this way again.”
